Seastream International Limited; cover, cost and conditions

Seastream International Limited was an English yard building sailing yachts in Falmouth, Cornwall. The line goes back to the designer Ian Anderson, who drew the first Seastream in 1978. In 2001 the British entrepreneur Chris Matthews took over the company. Alongside the Classic range of heavy displacement cruising yachts, he launched a new line of faster cruisers, presented at the Southampton Boat Show. These boats were built with light hulls in epoxy and carbon fibre; Ed Dubois and Ian Anderson worked on the designs, and Dick Young was brought in for the interior of the largest model. The type numbers give a rough guide to length in feet, which makes a Seastream easy to place at a glance.

Our model records hold four Seastream sailing yachts. The Classic range is represented by the Seastream 445 at 13.6 metres and the Seastream 465 at 14.46 metres, both listed from the 1998 build year. From 2000 they are joined by the Seastream 520 at 15.85 metres and the Seastream 650 at 20.1 metres, the largest boat on the list. Every entry ends with the 2006 build year. None of the four is shorter than 13 metres, two go beyond 15, and the 650 takes the brand into the twenty metre class. Earlier Seastream yachts of the eighties and nineties, such as the smaller deck saloon models, are not part of our records.

The Classic models are heavy, solidly built yachts designed for passage making, and owners have taken them to the west coast of Scotland, the Hebrides and Scandinavian waters. The 520 and 650 are a different proposition: light epoxy and carbon hulls that need a surveyor who knows composite construction, with attention to core moisture, bonding of bulkheads and the keel structure. On any Seastream, check the age of the standing rigging, the condition of the sails and the service history of the engine, generator and watermaker. A complete file of invoices and refit records is especially valuable when you are buying one of these yachts second hand.
