Worth knowing

Seawolf Yachts Limited; cover, cost and conditions

Seawolf Yachts was an English yard founded by David Feltham, who was both designer and boatbuilder. It began with a Seawolf 26 that Feltham drew and built for himself to race in the Round the Island Race. When other sailors asked for one of their own, he turned the project into a company. Seawolf belonged to the generation of British builders that flourished in the seventies and eighties, and at one point the range ran to eight boats from 6.5 to 13.1 metres, every one of them a Feltham design. Hulls were solid GRP. The Seawolf 30 has a fin keel with a spade rudder and a two-cabin layout, and the 26 was also offered with twin bilge keels.

Our model records list four designs, all sailing yachts. The Seawolf 23, at 7.0 metres, was built from 1976 to 1982, and the Seawolf 43, at 13.1 metres, from 1976 to 1983. The Seawolf 30 measures 9.1 metres and has the longest run, from 1977 to 1993. The Seawolf 26, at 7.95 metres, is listed as All marks, grouping every series together, with build years from 1983 to 1990. None of the four lines reaches the recent build years, so every Seawolf afloat is now more than thirty years old. The spread is wide: the 43 is almost twice the length of the 23.

A Seawolf from this period is a solid GRP boat, but age still shows in predictable places. Chainplates, keel bolts and the rudder bearings of a spade rudder deserve close attention, and so do the original deck fittings and their bedding. On a bilge-keel 26 look at the keel joints after years of drying out on moorings. Many boats have had engines, sails and electronics replaced, so a buyer should ask which parts are original and which are new. Club racing and family cruising were the intended use, and that is how most of them are still sailed.
