Seidelmann; cover, cost and conditions
Seidelmann Yachts was based in Berlin, New Jersey, and was founded in 1977 by J. Robert Seidelmann. Bob Seidelmann was a sailmaker who had won championships in one-design classes such as the Lightning, the Comet and the Duster, and in 1972 he had co-designed the Hunter 25 with John Cherubini. He drew most of his own boats, and having studied engineering at the Drexel Institute, he made all the fibreglass tooling for the factory himself. In 1980 the company became the first builder of Bruce Kirby's Sonar. Around 1984 Seidelmann bought the powerboat builder Pacemaker, and the last Seidelmann sailing boat left the plant in 1986.
Our model records list three designs, all with build years from 1978 to 1985: the Seidelmann 25, recorded as a sailing boat at 7.47 metres, and the Seidelmann 299 at 8.87 metres and the Seidelmann 37 at 11 metres, both listed as yachts. No line continues into later years, so every boat of the brand is now around forty years old or more. Together the three lengths span nearly the whole range the yard built, from about 24 to 37 feet. The Seidelmann 37 is the largest in our records and the only one over ten metres.
A glassfibre boat from this period rewards a careful survey. Deck fittings, stanchion bases and chainplates are the usual places where water finds its way into a cored deck, so a moisture meter is worth bringing along. Standing rigging of unknown age should be treated as due for renewal, and the rudder and its bearings deserve a look with the boat ashore. Many of these yachts have had new engines, sails or electronics over the years, and a folder of receipts tells a buyer a great deal. Original sails from the period are long past their working life, so a new wardrobe is often the first upgrade on a boat from a yard founded by a sailmaker.
