Sentinel Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Sentinel Boats is based in Hout Bay, near Cape Town in South Africa, and is run as a partnership between Peter Adamo and Pierre Malan. The yard specialises in traditional open dinghies, some in plywood and the production boats in fibreglass. Hulls and decks are moulded by a production partner, while the yard handles the woodwork, fittings and fit-out itself. Both main models take their cue from the Drascombe Lugger, the British open day boat with a traditional rig. The Explorer 18 was drawn by the South African designer Dudley Dix and intended for fibreglass production from the start. The Challenger began as a 13 foot plywood dinghy by Dix and is now built in fibreglass, stretched to 14 feet. A gunter or standing lug rig is the quickest way to spot one, and the boats are meant as safe family sailers.
Our model records list two designs, both classed as sailing boats and both on file since 2018. The Challenger measures 4 metres and the Explorer 5.5 metres. Both are still in production today, so this is a current range rather than a set of classics from past decades. Keeping the line to two hulls suits a small yard where each boat takes about six weeks to complete. The Explorer has also travelled, with boats shipped as far as the United Kingdom and the Seychelles. At home, the Langebaan lagoon is one of the waters where these boats are sailed, with families even sleeping aboard.
Because the range is young, most used Sentinels are only a few years old, yet an open boat still deserves a careful look. Check the joint between the moulded hull and deck, the centreboard housing and any spots where water can stand in the cockpit. The woodwork, from thwarts to spars, needs regular varnish or oil, especially under a strong southern sun. On the gunter rig, inspect the yard, its jaws and the halyard sheaves; on the standing lug, the condition of the yard and its parrel. If an outboard is fitted, ask for its service record. These boats are at home in sheltered bays, lagoons and lakes, and they suit families who want to sail, row or motor without a complicated rig.
