Far East Boats, whose models carry the Fareast name, builds at a factory just outside Shanghai. It started with the Optimist, built under licence from the international sailing federation, and added the 420, racing keelboats, cruisers and RIBs. Hulls are vacuum infused, and the keelboats were developed with the design office Simonis Voogd. On the keelboats the number after the name is roughly the length in feet, and the letter R marks the series from the 18 R to the 37 R.

Build years run from 2001 to 2027, and 13 models are still in production. Lengths range from 2.3 metres (Optimist) to 11.3 metres (37 R), with half between 4.2 and 8.4 metres. The R series climbs from the 18 R at just under six metres via the 23 R (7.3 m) and 28 R (9.1 m) to the 31 R at 9.5 metres. The RIB 480, 580 and 680 measure 4.8 to 6.8 metres, the number being the length in centimetres.
Most Fareast boats sail from a club slipway, and the small ones live on a trailer or dolly. For a dinghy, the hull, foils and sails decide its worth; for the keelboats, the age of the sails, the rig and the electronics count as much as the build year. A 28 R with fresh sails is a different proposition from one with several race seasons behind it. On the RIBs, engine size and hours matter most.
