Siltala Yachts Oy; cover, cost and conditions
Pentti Siltala set up Siltala Yachts in Finland in 1961 as a family yard that worked in glassfibre from day one. Its defining boat was the Nauticat 33, a sailing yacht with a high deckhouse drawn by the Finnish engineer Wilho Aarnipalo, who also penned the larger Nauticat 36 and 44. In the early eighties Sparkman & Stephens added designs such as the 40, 43 and 521, with fin keels in place of long keels, shorter pilothouses and smaller windows. Through the nineties the yard worked closely with Kaj Gustafsson. The company became Nauticat Yachts in 2005, went bankrupt in 2018 and was revived in 2022 by a group of Latvian entrepreneurs. In any marina a Nauticat gives itself away by its raised wheelhouse.
Our model records hold 22 Nauticat designs: 18 sailing yachts and four motorsailers, namely the Nauticat 38, 44, 331 and 441. The earliest entry is the Nauticat 33 from 1967. Ten designs were still in build in 2021 or 2022, and the 42, 331, 351 and 441 run right up to 2022. Lengths start at 9.95 metres for the Nauticat 32 and end at 15.9 metres for the 525. Thirteen designs stay below twelve metres, nine reach twelve metres or more, and four of those pass 15 metres: the 52, 515, 521 and 525. Two-digit names such as 33, 36 and 43 sit alongside three-digit ones from the 321 to the 525.
A motorsailer lives a double life, so a used Nauticat needs checking on both sides. Engine hours, the shaft and the cooling system count for more than on a pure sailing yacht, because these boats spend a good share of their time under power. On hulls from the seventies and eighties, which were laid up by hand, a moisture survey of hull and deck is money well spent. The big deckhouse windows should be inspected for leaks around their seals, and the inside steering position, with its cables or hydraulics, deserves a run through before purchase. The early long-keeled designs track steadily at sea but ask for patience when reversing into a tight berth.
