Snark Products; cover, cost and conditions

Snark Products was an American maker of small sailing boats based in Fort Lee, New Jersey, co-founded in the mid-sixties by Jim McMullen. The Snarks became known for the way they were made: the hull is expanded polystyrene foam, which the company clad with its own patented process, later with a skin of ABS plastic sold as Corelite and Armorclad. Ownership changed often. A New York advertising agency bought the firm in 1972, then came Kransco of San Francisco, Lockley in 1984, Entwistle in Massachusetts and, in 1996, the Meyers Boat Company of Adrian, Michigan, which halted production around 2018. Well known types include the Sea Snark, Super Snark and Sunflower.

Our model records list one Snark Products design, the Mayflower, a sailing boat of 3.5 metres built from 1975 to 1982. Within the brand it was something of an exception. Where most Snarks were made entirely of clad foam, the Mayflower, according to an American boat database, has a glassfibre hull with a polystyrene core, which makes it stiffer and longer lasting. It was meant as a family daysailer for beginners and small lakes, with a simple lateen sail and plenty of cockpit room. No line runs into the most recent build years, so the boats listed are around forty years old or more, small pieces of American leisure history still afloat.

A Mayflower is light enough to live on a roof rack or a small trailer, which also makes it easy to inspect. Turn the hull over and look for delamination where the glassfibre skin meets the foam core, and for soft spots near the mast step and the daggerboard trunk. The lateen spars and their lashings take a lot of strain for such a small boat, so check them for cracks and worn line. Sun is the main enemy of old plastics, so a boat kept under shade will be in better shape than one left out for years. Rigging is simple enough that a family can be sailing within minutes of reaching the water.
