The South Coast name goes back to the South Coast Boatyard in Cork, on Ireland's south coast. In the seventies the yard put the Shamrocks into series production, half tonners drawn by the designer Ron Holland. It began in 1974 with Golden Shamrock, a 30 footer Holland designed for the Half Ton Cup at La Rochelle. In 1976 the lightly built Silver Shamrock from the same yard won the Half Ton Cup in Trieste. For club sailors who wanted more comfort, the Club Shamrock followed, with a larger coachroof, more room below, a shorter cockpit and wheel steering instead of a tiller. The Cork yard later closed.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Shamrock appears from 1971 to 1980 at 9.15 metres, the Club Shamrock from 1973 to 1982 at 9.1 metres. The near identical length fits the fact that the club version grew out of the same design. Neither line reaches the most recent build years; the latest boats in the records date from 1982 and are now over 40 years old. Anyone buying a Shamrock today buys second hand, often with a long list of previous owners and refits. The range is narrow but clearly drawn: a racing hull and its cruising sister.
Owners who have sailed these boats for years point to a handful of known spots. Aluminium compression posts under the mast could crimp, early rudders and their fittings deserve close inspection, original mast tangs were in some cases replaced with through welded ones, and alloy propeller shaft brackets were prone to cracking. On the positive side, the floors in way of the keel bolts are described as strong, and the boats are said to handle drying out well. A buyer should ask what has already been renewed. Many Shamrocks still race in club fleets, so the state of the sails says a lot about how the boat has been used.
