Worth knowing
South Hants; cover, cost and conditions
South Hants Engineering, often referred to as South Hants Marine, was a British yard that built sailing yachts to designs by the American office of Sparkman & Stephens. Its first boat was the She 27 of 1971, drawn for the half ton class under the International Offshore Rule. The She 36 was designed as a three quarter tonner, a glassfibre racer-cruiser with wood trim, masthead sloop rig, swept fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder steered by wheel, with a Bukh diesel below. Between the two sits the She 33, a masthead sloop that straddles cruising and racing. A raked stem, a reverse transom and the skeg ahead of the rudder mark them out.
Our model records list three sailing yachts. The She 27 at 7.92 metres runs from 1971 to 1977, the She 36 at 10.79 metres from 1973 to 1986, and the She 33 at 9.8 metres from 1974 to 1993, which makes the 33 the longest running line at almost two decades. None of the three continues into recent years, so the youngest boats are some thirty years old and the oldest past fifty. All three sit between just under eight and just under eleven metres, the size band in which the IOR ton classes were raced in the seventies.
A She bought today is a classic with a racing pedigree, and it pays to look at it that way. Keel bolts on a swept fin keel deserve a check, especially on a boat that has been raced hard, and the skeg and rudder bearings should be inspected with the boat out of the water. Chainplates and deck fittings on boats of this age are worth rebedding if they show signs of weeping. Many owners have replaced the original Bukh, so engine hours and service history matter. Once sorted, these yachts suit coastal cruising and longer Channel passages as well as club racing.
