Ta Chiao Bros Yacht Building; cover, cost and conditions

Ta Chiao was a Taiwanese yard building sailing yachts. It was founded in Taipei in 1957 and built heavy cruising yachts in fibreglass, often rigged as ketches or schooners. The letters CT that most models carry come from the initials of the owner, C. T. Chen. You recognise these boats by the clipper style bow with its long overhang, the continuous long keel and the generous teak on deck and throughout the interior. The yard no longer builds new yachts and its models are now mostly found on the secondhand market.

Our model records list 60 Ta Chiao models: 47 sailing yachts, eleven motor yachts and two motorboats. Recorded build years start in 1970. Sixty series are recorded: the CT ketches 47, 48, 49, 56, 65 and 85, the sloops RH 43 and RH 52, the Ron Holland CT 43 ketch, and the motor yachts Olympia 76 in two versions, the Condor 175, 200 and 229 and the CT motor yachts 12, 13 and 15. Lengths run from 10.1 to 25.9 metres, half the models between 12.2 and 16.4 metres.

Timber is what defines these yachts today. A fibreglass hull ages differently from the teak that makes up their decks, superstructures and entire interiors, and leaking deck fittings, dried out seams and water in a core are the recurring themes. All of that happens slowly rather than in a single event, which is exactly what separates it from a storm, a sinking or a collision.
