Worth knowing

Tahe Sports; cover, cost and conditions

Tahe is an Estonian name. Tahe Outdoors, a maker of watersports equipment, bought BIC Sport, the watersports arm of the French BIC group, at the beginning of 2019, and with it a small dinghy that had been sold as the O'PEN Bic. Since 2019 it has been called the O'pen Skiff. From the 2021 collection onwards, BIC Sport and Tahe Outdoors were merged into a single brand, TAHE, with a strong focus on young sailors and windsurfers, the Techno 293 OD board among them. The Skiff itself was drawn by the Italian studio Vitali Design and first built in 2006. Its hull is thermoformed polyethylene, and it carries a single fully battened mainsail on a cat rig.

Our model records hold one design for Tahe Sports: the O'pen Skiff, entered as a sailing dinghy of 2.75 metres with build years from 2017 to 2024. None of the entries runs into the most recent build years. The listed years therefore include a period when the boat was still sold as the O'PEN Bic. The other figures are small and exact: a waterline of 2.19 metres, a beam of 1.09 metres, a weight of about 45 kilograms and 4.5 square metres of sail. The boat was conceived for teaching children to sail and for one-design racing, and it is recognised as an international class by World Sailing.

A rotomoulded or thermoformed plastic hull is tough and forgiving, which is exactly why it suits a sailing school. It does not take kindly to being dragged over concrete for years, though, and deep scores on the underside are worth a close look. On a used Skiff, check the mast sections and their joints, the battens and the sail cloth, and make sure the rudder and daggerboard sit firmly without play. Many boats live on a launching trolley and are carried down the beach by two children, so the trolley wheels and straps matter too. Rinsing with fresh water after salt water sessions keeps fittings and blocks running freely.
