Worth knowing
Tartan Marine Inc.; cover, cost and conditions
Tartan Marine builds sailing yachts in Fairport Harbor, Ohio, on the shore of Lake Erie. The company grew out of Douglass & McLeod, a partnership from the late 1940s between Ray McLeod, who ran a marina and built wooden fishing boats, and Sandy Douglass, who designed and built small plywood sailboats. As Tartan Marine it went on to build progressively larger fibreglass yachts through several changes of ownership. The names tell you the size: the early boats carry short names such as 34C or Ten, while the later four digit names like 3400 or 4300 begin with the approximate length in feet.
Our model records hold ten Tartan designs, all sailing yachts. The 34C opens the list in 1971 and runs to 1978, the Ten follows from 1976 to 1984, and the 3700 spans 1975 to 2012, with the 4100 arriving in 1996. A newer generation starts in 2003 with the 3400, 3700 CCR, 4300, 4400 and 5100, joined by the 5300 in 2005; the last recorded build years fall in 2013. Lengths run from 10 metres for the Tartan Ten to 16.15 metres for the 5300. Five models sit between 10 and 11.3 metres, three between 12.5 and 13.5 metres and two above 15 metres.
Every Tartan in our records is at least ten metres long, so these are keel boats for a marina berth or a mooring, lifted out by crane each autumn rather than towed home. Boats from the seventies deserve a careful look at chainplates, deck fittings and standing rigging before each season. The 2000s generation mostly asks for routine work on sails, engine and electronics, and suits coastal cruising as well as longer passages.
