Tattoo Yachts is based in Stuart, Florida, and carries on a well known American line of boats. When Roger MacGregor retired in 2013 and closed his plant in Costa Mesa, his daughter Laura MacGregor Sharp and her husband Paul Sharp set up the new company. They took over the moulds of the MacGregor 26M and build the boat, with small refinements, as the Tattoo 26; the German magazine Yacht put it simply: MacGregor is now called Tattoo. The concept is easy to recognise: a light composite hull with a water tank as ballast that can be drained for the road, built-in foam flotation, a daggerboard and kick-up rudders, plus an outboard on the transom, between 10 and 60 hp on the Tattoo 26.
Our model records list two designs, both classed as motorsailers and both shown from build year 2018. The Tattoo 22 measures 6.9 metres and the Tattoo 26 reaches 7.87 metres. Both lines run into the most recent build years. The difference of almost a metre mostly decides how much room there is below and what kind of car is needed to tow the rig. Anyone looking for an older boat from the same moulds will find it under the MacGregor name.
The water ballast is the heart of the design, so it is worth knowing well. The tank must be full before sailing, because the boat relies on it for stability, and the valves, seals and tank should be checked for leaks and growth. Daggerboard case and rudder pivots take wear from launching and beaching. The outboard needs regular servicing and a freshwater flush after salt water. On a used boat, look at the trailer as closely as the hull: rollers, winch, brakes and lights all see hard work. The shallow draft opens up creeks and beaches that deeper boats never reach, which is exactly how most owners use these boats.
