Tayana Yachten / Ta Yang; cover, cost and conditions
Ta Yang Yacht Building was founded in 1973 in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan; the name translates roughly as big ocean. The yard built glassfibre sailing yachts drawn by Robert Perry, Robert Harris, Robb Ladd and Pieter Beeldsnijder among others. Its most familiar design is the Tayana 37, a Perry double-ender with a hand-laid hull, teak joinery and a modified long keel, mostly cutter rigged with a few ketches. Harris drew the Vancouver 42. A Tayana is easy to pick out in a harbour: pointed stern, bowsprit and plenty of wood on deck and below. According to the reference, the yard has not been trading since September 2020.
Our model records list 16 designs: 14 sailing yachts and two motor yachts, the Tayana 41+2 and the Triumphator. Build years run from 1973 to 2009, and no design reaches recent production. The smallest is the Tayana 37 Ketch at 11.2 metres, the largest the Tayana 65 at 20.6 metres. Six carry the word Cutter in their name, among them the Tayana 47 C.C. Cutter and the Tayana 58 P.H. Cutter. Eight designs measure 15 metres or more, including the 52, 55, 58 and 65 families. The longest run in the list belongs to the Tayana 55, from 1979 to 2009, followed closely by the Tayana 37 from 1973 to 2006.
Most of these yachts were bought to cross oceans, and many still do. On a used boat the teak decks are the first thing to check: old screw holes let water into the core, and a soft spot underfoot is a warning. Iron ballast, where fitted, should be inspected for rust at the keel joint. Bronze or stainless chainplates hidden behind joinery are worth exposing on survey, and original fuel and water tanks may be near the end of their life. Bowsprit, bobstay and the cutter's inner forestay take heavy loads. A boat with a clear record of refits and a recent rigging survey is the safer starting point for long passages.
