TG-Boat Oy; cover, cost and conditions
TG boats come from Porvoo, a short drive east of Helsinki in Finland. According to a test in the German magazine Boote, the yard was founded there in the 1970s, started out with GRP racing boats and later turned to cabin boats; since 2021 the brand has belonged to the Otto Brandt Group. Hulls are GRP and the look is plainly Nordic: sturdy cabin boats with an enclosed helm, big windows and a working boat attitude rather than showroom polish. Names give away the size. Older three digit models such as the TG 430 Silverfish state length in centimetres, four digit ones such as the TG 6300 in millimetres, and the newer boats in metres, as with the TG 6.9 X.
Our model records list 24 TG motorboats with build years from 1990 to current production. Four of them start in 1990: the 420 Silverfish, 490 Goldfish, 6000 Sport Cruiser and 7000 Kingcruiser. Twenty lines have ended, the last in 2022 with the TG 7200, 7200 King Cruiser and TG Alfa, while the TG 5.9, TG 6.9 X, TG 7.9 and 7.9 Supreme carry on. The smallest boat is the 4.2 metre Silverfish and the largest the 8.02 metre 7.9 Supreme, but the core of the range is compact: 13 models sit between 6 and 6.7 metres.
A TG is built for northern conditions. The enclosed wheelhouse keeps the crew dry in spring and autumn, so the season often runs longer than with an open boat. Models up to about six and a half metres travel on a trailer, while bigger ones usually stay on a summer berth. Before the freeze the boat comes ashore, the outboard is flushed and serviced, and the GRP hull is washed and checked for gelcoat damage from rocks and jetties. On hulls from the 1990s it pays to look closely at the transom, deck fittings and windows.
