Thames Marine built sailing boats at Canvey Island in Essex. Len Wakefield and Ray Walsh started the business as Thames Structural Plastics, a name that gives away the material: the boats were built mostly in glassfibre. Three families came out of the yard, Snapdragon, Mirage and Invader. Snapdragon names follow two systems. Two digit numbers such as 23, 26 or 29 are roughly the length in feet, while three and four digit numbers such as 600, 747 or 1100 give the length in centimetres. The Mirage 26 to 37 use feet as well.
Our model records hold 23 Thames Marine entries: ten sailing boats, twelve sailing yachts and one motor yacht, the 9.46 metre Amazon 31. Twelve entries are Snapdragons, with the Snapdragon 600 listed twice under slightly different years. Seven belong to the Mirage family and two to the Invader family, plus the 7.3 metre Goosander. The Snapdragon 29 opens the list in 1964, Snapdragon lines are recorded up to 1986 and Mirage lines from 1972 to 1998, the Mirage 37 lasting longest. Lengths run from 6 metres (Invader 20, Snapdragon 600) to 11.28 metres (Mirage 37), and 13 of the 23 sit between 7 and 9 metres.
Every Thames Marine boat is now decades old, so condition matters more than the name on the transom. Check the keel bolts, chainplates and the deck around the fittings, and look for moisture in older glassfibre before a purchase. The small 6 metre boats tow easily and live happily on a trailer or a drying mooring, while the Mirage 30 and 37 are berth boats for coastal cruising. A survey, fresh standing rigging and a winter ashore under a well tied tarpaulin keep these older yachts sailing.
