The Falmouth Bass Boat Company Limited; cover, cost and conditions
Falmouth Bass Boats come from Falmouth on the south coast of Cornwall, a harbour where small sailing and working boats have always been part of the scene. The design dates back to the 1950s and was first built in Falmouth. The Broads Authority boat register names Rodney Warrington-Smythe as the designer of the Bass 16. It began life as an open sailing dinghy, and some boats were later given a small cuddy cabin forward. The hulls are glassfibre. Today several firms keep the designs in production, among them Riverside Products, GMP Yacht Services and Fos-Tek Marine Services. Besides the Bass 16 and Bass 20, the family includes the Falmouth Gypsy and the Working Boat 25.
Our model records list two designs, both classed as sailing boats and both shown with build years from 1982 to 1988: the Falmouth Bass 16 at 4.83 metres and the Falmouth Bass 20 at 6.05 metres. Neither reaches the recent build years, so the youngest boat in our records is close to forty years old. Just over 1.2 metres separate the two sizes. The smaller boat sits on a light trailer and can be sailed open, while the larger one offers more cockpit space and suits day trips along the coast. The Gypsy and the Working Boat 25 do not appear under this name in our records.
A glassfibre boat of this age is usually sound, but it pays to look closely. Check the hull for osmosis blisters and crazing in the gelcoat, and the deck and any cuddy for soft areas around fittings. On a boat that has been sailed hard, the centreboard case, the mast step and the chainplates carry most of the load. Wooden trim, if there is any, wants regular oiling. Sails and running rigging on an older boat may well be original and due for renewal. Many owners keep boats like these on a trailer or a drying mooring, so the trailer and the keel band deserve attention too.
