Thoma Boote is a small Swiss yard on the Walensee. Walter Thoma started a boat service in Weesen in 1972, and in 1977 it became the Bootswerft Thoma. Sailing boats came first, sport fishing boats and motorboats later. In 1994 the business moved into a new building in Mühlehorn, also on the lake, and Thoma Boote GmbH was founded at the same time. Today the yard is run by Andreas Nötzli, who completed his boatbuilding apprenticeship there in 2003. The model names sum up the range neatly: Classic for the traditional motorboat, Sportfisher for anglers and Tender for the small companions.

Our model records list eight designs, all motorboats and all still listed in the most recent build years. The Classic line consists of the Thoma 500, 550 and 600 Classic at 5, 5.5 and 6 metres; the 550 Classic, from 2002, is the earliest entry. The Sportfisher comes as the 600, 650 and 660 at 6, 6.5 and 6.6 metres, with the 660 joining in 2007. Two tenders complete the picture, the T2 Tender at 6.6 metres from 2010 and the T1 Tender at 6 metres from 2012. Nothing in the range is longer than 6.6 metres, so the whole programme spans just 1.6 metres.

Boats of this size live on lakes and on trailers. Fresh water is kind to gelcoat, but long Alpine winters bring their own tasks: drain the cooling system, look after the battery and keep the boat dry under a tarpaulin. Before buying a used Thoma, inspect the trailer as closely as the hull, with bearings, lights and brakes on the list, and ask how often the engine has been serviced. Fishing boats tend to collect extra holes for rod holders and electronics over the years, and each one should be properly sealed. A lake boat with a clear history from a single owner is usually easy to judge.
