Worth knowing

Thomas Bergner; cover, cost and conditions

Thomas Bergner Bootsbau is a boatyard in Trappenkamp, Schleswig-Holstein, that combines carbon fibre with wood. It builds dinghy cruisers, H dinghies and DN ice yachts, plus a small series of 30 square metre dinghy cruisers. New Pirat dinghies come out of the shop as well, the youth class Carl Martens designed in 1938 for a competition run by the magazine Yacht. The O-Jolle in the range goes back to the one-design that Hellmut Stauch drew for the 1936 Olympic Games. What marks a Bergner boat is the pairing of classic German dinghy classes with wood and carbon, built in a small workshop rather than in large series.

Our model records list nine designs: eight dinghies and small sailing boats and one sailing yacht, the JK 28 Jollenkreuzer at 8.5 metres. Build years run from 1976 to the present, and eight lines reach into the most recent years. Only the glassfibre H-Jolle ends in 2004; the Bergner H-Jolle, the 15 square metre touring dinghy at 6.2 metres, runs alongside it from 1997. The Seggerling at 4.7 metres arrived in 2003, the O-Jolle at 5 metres in 2005, and the Pirat, the Solo-Dinghy and the Jollenkreuzer 20qm at 7.75 metres in 2010. The JK 28 followed in 2012 and the KK28 Kielkreuzer in 2017. The Solo-Dinghy is the smallest at 3.78 metres, the JK 28 and KK28 the largest at 8.5 metres each. Four designs measure five metres or less.

Wood and carbon reward an owner who keeps an eye on them. On a used Bergner, look at the varnish and the edges where water can creep into the wood, at the joints between wooden and carbon parts, and at the centreboard case, which takes the loads of every tack. Dinghies spend a lot of time on trailers and launching trolleys, so check the hull where it rests on the supports. Foils, mast and boom in carbon are light but dislike point loads and careless storage. Several of these classes race actively, so the condition of the sails and the measurement certificate matter when buying.
