Worth knowing

Timpenny; cover, cost and conditions

The Timpenny 670 is the work of designer Colin Thorne, who drew the little cabin sailer in the mid seventies and named it after his two children, Tim and Penny. Most boats were built by Timpenny Yachts in Australia, and production was later licensed to the United Kingdom as well. The hull is glassfibre, with a heavy lifting keel underneath carrying some 485 lb of ballast in a profile closer to a centreboard than a fixed fin. Above it stands a fractional sloop rig. That pairing is what marks the 670 out: a trailer sailer with a proper cabin that is lighter to tow, launch and crane than the larger trailerable boats of around 25 feet.

Our model records hold exactly one design under the Timpenny name, the Timpenny 670, filed as a sailing boat. The recorded build years run from 1976 to 1984 and the length is 6.62 metres, matching the design's 21.7 feet. Beam is about 2.2 metres, and the original sail plan carries 211 square feet, a little under 20 square metres. No other lines, sister ships or larger versions appear in our records, and no build year reaches the present day. Anyone looking for a 670 today is buying second hand, and even the youngest boat in our data is now more than forty years old. Because the boats were built both in Australia and under licence in Britain, some examples on the European market come from British moulds.

A lifting keel is the heart of the boat and the first thing to inspect. The lifting gear, whether winch, cable or tackle, wears with every launch, and the keel box should be checked for cracks, weeping and signs of a hard grounding. On a glassfibre hull of this age, look for blisters below the waterline, soft spots in the deck around fittings and tired chainplates. The fractional rig is simple, yet standing rigging that has done decades of service is often due for renewal. Since most owners trail their boats, the road trailer, its bearings, lights and keel supports matter as much as the boat itself.
