TPI Composites; cover, cost and conditions

TPI Composites began as Tillotson-Pearson Inc., set up in Rhode Island by Everett Pearson and Neil Tillotson after the original Pearson Yachts had been sold to Grumman Allied Industries. Pearson is remembered as a pioneer of glassfibre boatbuilding. In February 1977 Rod and Bob Johnstone took the design of their J/24 to his composites shop to have it built in glassfibre, which started the partnership with J/Boats of Newport. The word Composites was added to the name later, and the firm went on to build wind turbine blades, buses, Lagoon catamarans and Alerion Express and Freedom sailing boats. Its J boats are easy to read: the letter J, a slash and the length in feet.

Our model records list nine designs: the J/24, classed as a sailing boat, and eight sailing yachts. Build years run from 1975 to 1995, and none reaches into the most recent years. The J/24 at 7.32 metres is the smallest and runs from 1975 to 1994, with the J/30 at 9.09 metres following from 1976. The early eighties brought the J/35, the J/29 and the J/41, at 12.47 metres the largest design. From 1983 came the J/28, J/34, J/37 C and J/33. Three designs stay below nine metres, five measure more than ten. The number in each name gives the approximate length in feet.

These are boats built to be raced, and many have had hard lives on the course. On a used J, look at the keel joint and the floors around it for signs of groundings, check the deck core around stanchions and fittings for soft spots, and inspect the rudder bearings. Sail wardrobes vary widely, so it pays to list every sail and its age. Standing rigging older than about ten years is usually due for replacement. A J/24 is often trailed to events, which puts wear on the trailer and on the hull where it rests on the pads. Owners of one-design boats often keep detailed notes of what has been replaced, and asking for them saves guesswork.
