Trapper Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Trapper Yachts grew out of Anstey Yachts of Poole on the south coast of England. Its most familiar boat is the Trapper 500, a design that first appeared in North America in 1970 as the C&C 27, drawn by the Canadian office of Cuthbertson and Cassian. From 1972 Anstey built it in Poole, later changed its name to Trapper Yachts and contracted out the hull moulding to Northshore. In 1980 the design became the Trapper 501, with more headroom, a redesigned keel and more conventional rudder stops. The marque therefore stands for glassfibre cruisers with a North American hand, built in Dorset for Channel and coastal sailing.
Our model records list 16 designs: 13 sailing yachts and three smaller sailing boats, the Galion 22, Trapper TS 240 and Trapper T 250. The oldest entries, the Galion 22, Galion 28 and Trapper 28, start in 1967, and the last build years are 1992 for the Trapper 300 and T 250. None reaches recent production. Lengths run from 6.7 metres for the Galion 22 to 12.7 metres for the Trapper 42. Twelve designs stay under ten metres; the three larger yachts, the Trapper 36, 38 and 42, are listed from 1984 to 1991. Alongside them sits the numbered series 300, 500, 501, 600, 700 and 950.
A Trapper is now at least three decades old, and condition matters more than the name. On the 500 and 501 the keel joint and keel bolts are worth checking, and owners compare headroom and keel shape when choosing between the two. Older hulls can show osmosis, so a moisture reading on survey is sensible. Original deck hardware and windows tend to leak after so many seasons and may need rebedding. Many of these boats have had new engines, sails and electronics over the years; receipts and a clear refit history help a buyer judge what has been done and what is still waiting.
