Trawler Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Trawler Catamarans is the name under which the French catamaran yard Fountaine Pajot built its first power catamarans. They came out of the Port Blanc works in La Rochelle, a former racing powerboat plant with its own slipway, and Fountaine Pajot set up a dedicated subsidiary to keep up with demand. The first was the Maryland 37, drawn with Michel Joubert and shown at the Paris Boat Show in January 1998. In 2001 the Cumberland 44 joined the Greenland 34 and Maryland 37 as the new flagship and was later stretched into the Cumberland 46. Two hulls with a wide saloon between them and the upright profile of a trawler made for steady, long passages give them away.
Our model records list seven designs, all power catamarans, built between 1996 and 2013. The smallest are the Greenland 34 at 10.3 metres, from 1997 to 2008, and the Highland 35 Pilot at 10.35 metres, from 2002 to 2013. The Maryland 37 measures 11.14 metres and runs longest, from 1996 to 2013. The Cumberland 44 at 13.4 metres starts in 2000 and the Cumberland 46 at 13.95 metres in 2004, both ending in 2012. At the top come the Queensland 55 at 16.75 metres and the Queensland 60, the largest at 18.28 metres, listed from 2002 to 2009. None reaches the most recent build years. The names follow a pattern: a region, then the length in feet.
Power catamarans of this kind are built for long, economical passages, and on a used one the two engines tell most of the story. Ask for the service history of both, compare their hours, and check shafts, seals and the rudders in each hull. A catamaran has twice the underwater fittings of a monohull, so a lift out is the only way to see them properly. The bridgedeck between the hulls takes slamming in a head sea, which makes it worth looking for stress marks under the saloon floor. Generators, watermakers and air conditioning were common on the larger Queensland models and add to the list of systems to test.
