Worth knowing
Triobatar; cover, cost and conditions
Triobatar stands for Trio Båtar AB of Kristinehamn, a town at the northern end of Lake Vänern in Sweden. The yard built family cruisers in glassfibre: according to the source the Trio 80 appeared in 1976, the Trio 92 in 1980, and in 1982 the Trio 96, drawn by Hans Blomstergren and the largest of the line. Hulls are solid glassfibre with a fin keel and lead ballast. The Trio 96 has a spade rudder and a fractional rig, while the Trio 80 and 92 are masthead sloops. The boats were meant as family yachts that are equally at home on a day sail and on longer coastal passages.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts. The Trio 80 is the smallest at 8.05 metres and has the longest entry, from 1973 to 1987. The Trio 92 measures 9.2 metres and is listed from 1977 to 1987, the Trio 96 at 9.6 metres from 1980 to 1993. None reaches into the most recent build years; the last year in the list is 1993. The three sizes sit close together and were built side by side for years, so the used market offers boats from two decades. Anyone looking for a Trio today is looking at a yacht that is at least thirty years old.
With every Trio now more than thirty years old, condition is everything. Look at the keel bolts and the joint between lead keel and hull, the rudder and its bearings, and the chainplates where they pass through the deck. Solid glassfibre hulls of this period are robust, but moisture readings and a check for osmosis below the waterline are worth the effort. Standing rigging older than ten to fifteen years is usually due for replacement, and original engines may be near the end of their working life. Boats laid up ashore through long Nordic winters often show it in hatch seals, window gaskets and wooden trim.
