True Boat Builders ApS is the Danish yard that builds Nordship yachts today. The story starts in 1978 in Lunderskov, where Lars Buchwald set up a business called Buchwald Yachtværft. For its first ten years the workshop built under contract for other Danish yards, and in 1988 Buchwald acquired the rights to build Nordship yachts in series. The first deck saloon models appeared in the early nineties, and that type has shaped the brand ever since: sailing yachts with a raised coachroof and large windows, so you can sit in the saloon and still watch the water. True Boat Builders grew out of a merger and also builds the Nordic Cruiser and Faurby brands.
Our model records list 24 designs: 18 sailing yachts, three motorboats, two RIBs and one sailing dinghy. The oldest entries are the Nordship 808 of 1980 and the Nordship 666 of 1981, followed from 1984 by the Nordship 27, 29, 32 and 35. The DS line enters our records with the 35 DS in 1996 and runs through the 360 DS, 380 DS and 430 DS to the 450 DS of 2020. The two Custom Line designs, the 500 DS and 570 DS, appear from 2018; at 17.74 metres the Nordship 570 DS Custom Line is the largest boat of the brand. At the other end sit the Nordship 420 RIB and the Nordship 42M motorboat, both 4.2 metres long. Eleven designs reach into the most recent build years, and fourteen measure ten metres or more.
A deck saloon yacht asks for attention in places a conventional cruiser does not. The big saloon windows are bedded in sealant that ages, so a look at the frames for weeping or crazing belongs on every survey. Teak decks, a heated interior and a long list of electronics make maintenance a steady job rather than a spring chore. On a used Nordship from the eighties it pays to check the chainplates, the rudder bearing and the hull below the waterline. The newer DS models are often sailed far from Denmark, so service records from foreign yards are worth asking for.
