Tyler Boat Company of Tonbridge in Kent was one of the early names in British glassfibre boatbuilding. It grew out of mould making for precast concrete and produced mainly hull and deck mouldings that other yards fitted out. That is why boats by very different designers sit under this name: the Twister 28 was moulded by Tyler and first fitted out by Uphams, and Keith Nelson's Nelson motor boats were built on Tyler hulls too. A boat of this origin is recognised less by a styling line than by a heavy, hand laid hull from a time when glassfibre was used generously.

Our model records list 37 models, 20 sailing yachts, 14 motor yachts, two motorboats and a sailing dinghy. Recorded build years begin in 1963 with the Twister 28 and run to 2003. Among the sailing yachts are the Bowman 46, Rebel 41, Victory 36 to 53, the Slipper range from 42 to 49 and the Ohlson 38; among the motor yachts the Nelson range from the Nelson 29 to the Nelson 83 and the Poseidon 45 and 52. Lengths run from 5.5 to 25.3 metres, half of them between 9.2 and 15 metres.

With these boats the individual hull matters more than the name. Because different yards fitted out the mouldings, joinery, engine and rig vary from boat to boat, and a current survey is the most reliable record of what a particular boat is.
