Union Boot stands for Union Ship Co. of Taipei, Taiwan, a yard that later renamed itself Union Yacht Co. Its best known boat began with John Edwards, founder of Hans Christian Yachts, who commissioned Robert Perry in the early seventies to draw a 34-foot cruiser to be built in Taipei. Perry stretched the design amidships and aft into a 36-footer. After Edwards and the yard fell out, Union kept the moulds and went on building the boat under its own name. The Union 36 is recognisable by her long keel, pointed stern and cutter rig.
Our model records list one design for the brand, the Union 36, a sailing yacht of 11 metres with build years from 1976 to 1987. She is a heavy displacement boat meant for open water passages and for living aboard. On the American west coast the same hull was also sold under importers' names, the Mariner Polaris 36 among them, so a search for a used boat should include those labels. The youngest boat in our records is now close to forty years old.
