V1 (Russell Coutts 44) stands for V1 Advanced Composite Technologies, a Dubai yard located in the Jebel Ali Free Zone. It builds in composites and made its name with the RC44, a one-design drawn by Russell Coutts together with the naval architect Andrej Justin. V1 built the boats to the designers' specifications together with Pauger Carbon of Budapest and was the official RC44 builder for the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. The class made its racing debut at the Dubai Match Race Challenge in March 2006. Beyond race boats the range includes cruising yachts, tenders and a sport fisher, most of them carrying the V1 name and their length in feet.
Our model records list nine designs: six sailing yachts and three motor yachts. All start in 2003; eight end in 2010, and only the Russell Coutts 44 at 13.35 metres runs on to 2015. None reaches into the most recent years. Among the sailing yachts the range runs from the V1 30 Sport Boat at 9.14 metres through the V1 47 in Racer and Cruiser Racer form at 14.5 and 14.4 metres and the V1 60 Open Cruiser at 18 metres up to the V1 83 Cruiser Racer, at 25.32 metres the largest design. The motor yachts are the V1 60 Sport Fisher at 18 metres and the Tender Gull Wing and Tender Open at 10 metres each. Three designs measure 18 metres or more.
Composite race boats are light and stiff, and their condition depends on how hard they were pushed. On a used RC44 or V1 (Russell Coutts 44) 47, ask for the race history and look for signs of impact damage around the bow, the keel attachment and the rudder; an ultrasound or tap test of the laminate is worth arranging. Carbon spars and foils need a careful look for cracks at fittings. Race sails are consumables, so the age and number of sets says a lot. For the larger cruising and motor designs, the systems matter as much as the hull, and on yachts that spent years in Gulf heat, hoses, seals and deck hardware age faster.
