Västerås Härdplast was based at Tillberga near Västerås on Lake Mälaren in Sweden. The name gives the game away: härdplast is Swedish for glassfibre reinforced plastic, and the yard was one of those that carried classic yacht lines over into GRP during the sixties. Its most famous boat is the Bacchant IV, drawn by Knud Reimers, a designer born in Denmark and trained as a shipwright in Germany who became one of the defining names in Swedish yacht design. The Bacchant IV was built from 1964 with a glassfibre hull and wooden gunwales, and she is easy to pick out by her long keel, slender overhangs and masthead rig with the mast stepped on deck.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Bacchant IV measures 10.88 metres and appears from 1963 to 1982, close to two decades. Below she has a galley, a heads, a forepeak berth and two saloon settees, and she was conceived as a seaworthy cruiser. The Brilliant is the larger boat at 12.3 metres and runs in our records from 1970 to 1980; beyond these figures we found nothing further about her. Neither design reaches the most recent build years, so anyone sailing one of these yachts today is handling a boat well over forty years old.
A long keeled classic from the sixties rewards patient care. On a Bacchant IV the wooden gunwales need regular oiling or varnish, and the joint between wood and glassfibre is where water likes to creep in. With the mast stepped on deck, the area under the mast foot deserves a look for compression or soft laminate. Early GRP hulls were often laid up generously, but a survey out of the water will show whether there is osmosis. These boats were drawn for the short, steep chop of the Baltic, and owners tend to keep sailing them for decades rather than trading up.
