Velmare is an Italian yard in Donoratico on the Tuscan coast. A recent profile on the trade site Superyacht24 puts its history at around 55 years. It began with yachts of twelve to sixteen metres, above all the glassfibre Vagabond, which enthusiasts still look out for. Over time the company moved into subcontracting and today makes complex components for yachts of up to 42 metres. Broker listings for the Vagabond 47 and for the smaller Donoratico 28 show what the early sailing yachts have in common: solid GRP hulls, interiors with a generous amount of wood and, on the Donoratico, a long keel. According to those listings the Vagabond 47 has three cabins.
Our model records list three designs, all sailing yachts. The Vagabond 47 measures 14.3 metres and is recorded from 1974 to 1996, making it the longest-running line of the brand. The Vagabond 53 is the largest at 16.26 metres and runs from 1976 to 1984. The Velmare 38, at 11.45 metres, also starts in 1976 and continues until 1988. None of the three reaches into recent build years, so every boat on the market is second-hand and most are several decades old. Together the three lines span a little over eleven to a little over sixteen metres, and two of them are longer than fourteen metres.
With yachts of this age, condition varies widely from one hull to the next. Some have been rebuilt from the inside out; one Vagabond 47 offered for sale was stripped back to the bare hull in 2010, reinforced and refitted. Others still carry much of their original equipment. On a viewing, look at chainplates and keel bolts, at the deck core around fittings and at the age of standing rigging, wiring and plumbing. A moisture reading of the hull is worth having on any older GRP boat. Yachts kept in the Mediterranean live with strong sun, which wears on teak, canvas and gelcoat, so a thorough survey pays for itself.
