Worth knowing
Verlvale; cover, cost and conditions
Verlvale Ltd. was a British builder whose sailing yachts carry the short name Verl. Its boats came from well known pens. Ed Dubois drew the Verl 790 while working in the Miller & Whitworth design office, and it appeared in 1975 as a small cruiser with a turn of speed, an iron fin keel and a rudder on a partial skeg. Robert Clark designed the Verl 900 in 1974 as a masthead cruiser/racer; Clark had earlier drawn Gipsy Moth III for Sir Francis Chichester. In 1994 the Humber Boat Company took over building the Verl 790.
Our model records list five sailing yachts between 7.9 and 10.31 metres. The oldest line is the Verl 27 at 8.32 metres, built from 1970 to 1979. The Verl 900 at 9.22 metres follows from 1973 and the Verl 790 at 7.9 metres from 1974; the 790 is the smallest design and, running to 1999, the longest lived. The Verl 33 measures 10.31 metres and is recorded from 1976 to 1986, the Verl Hustler 33 at 9.9 metres from 1989 to 1995. Three of the five sit between eight and ten metres, and none reaches the recent build years.
On the Verl 790 the engine is either an outboard in a well or a small inboard of five to ten horsepower; the well avoids inboard maintenance, but its seals and the outboard bracket are worth a look. Headroom is modest except under the companionway, so a viewing in person tells more than photos. Two layouts exist, an open four-berth saloon and a five-berth version with a conventional forecabin. On any Verl of this age, check the keel bolts and the area around them, the chainplates and the rudder bearings, and ask how old the standing rigging and the sails are.
