Vindövarvet AB; cover, cost and conditions

Vindövarvet is one of the long established yards on the Swedish island of Orust. Carl Andersson founded it in 1926, building mostly pilot boats at first and, in the 1930s, racing boats such as Dragons, A22s and 5.5 metre yachts. His son Karl-Erik Andersson, a naval engineer, took charge in the early 1960s. The Vindö range began in 1961 with a wooden boat, the Vindö 30 followed in 1963 and the smaller Vindö 22 in 1964, and from 1965 the yard built in GRP. A glassfibre hull paired with teak and mahogany joinery gives every Vindö its classic face.

Our model records list 15 Vindö designs, 14 sailing yachts and one sailing boat, the Vindö 22. The earliest build years are 1964 for the Vindö 22 and 30, and the latest entry is 2000 for the Vindö 34 MS. Four models form the Vindö 50 family, the 50, 50 MS, 50 S and 50 SL, all 10.65 metres long. The number in the name is not a length: the Vindö 90 measures 13 metres. Sizes run from 7.1 metres for the Vindö 22 to 14.17 metres for the Vindö Corsair 75.

Mahogany and teak are the soul of these boats and need oil, varnish and a dry winter indoors. Owners sail them in the archipelagos and along the coast, and a careful survey of deck fittings, keel bolts and woodwork is the best start with an older Vindö.
