Worth knowing
W-Class Yacht Company, LLC.; cover, cost and conditions
The W-Class Yacht Company grew from an idea in 1997. Donald Tofias, a Boston property developer and keen sailor, approached the designer Joel White of Brooklin Boat Yard in Maine with a plan to revive one-design match racing in the spirit-of-tradition style. The first design was the W-76: in 1998 Wild Horses and her sister White Wings were launched, both built at Brooklin Boat Yard. Their hulls are cold-moulded from Douglas fir and western red cedar and sheathed in glass. The W-76 was the last of more than fifty designs from Joel White, and it pairs the look of the golden age of yachting with a modern hull shape.
Our model records list five sailing yachts, all with build years from 1999 to 2006. The names roughly follow length in feet: the W-46 measures 14.23 metres, the W-62 18.95 metres and the W-76 23.26 metres. Above them sit the W-105 at 32 metres and the W-130, the largest at 39.62 metres. The range runs from a yacht a small crew can handle up to superyacht size. None of the lines is recorded into the recent build years. According to the yachting press, W-Class designs exist in lengths of 22, 37, 46, 76 and 100 feet.
A cold-moulded wooden hull under glass is strong and light, but it relies on the sheathing staying intact. On a used W-Class, look for cracks or soft spots in the glass, especially around fittings, the keel join and the rudder, and ask for moisture readings. Any varnished wood and teak are part of the character and need regular care. These yachts were built to race, often against a sister ship, so ask how hard they have been campaigned, check the sail inventory and the age of the running and standing rigging. On the larger designs, a professional crew is part of normal operation.
