Walsteds Bådeværft sits on Thurø, a small island off Svendborg in the south of Funen. Aage Walsted took over the yard in 1949, and since then it has built mostly sailing yachts. Its reputation rests on larger cruising yachts for which it worked with designers such as Aage Nielsen and Olin Stephens. Alongside these one-off builds, the seventies brought a glassfibre production yacht named after the island: the Thurö 33. Niels and Peter Roos drew her in 1973 as a sloop of about ten metres, just over three metres in beam and with 1.80 metres of draft. She is easy to recognise by her classic Scandinavian lines, a long low coachroof and plenty of wood on deck and below.

She is filed as a sailing yacht of 10.1 metres, with build years from 1973 to 1985, so every boat in the series is now more than forty years old. Brokers sometimes list her as the Walstedt Thuro 33, which is the same boat. The yard's larger one-off yachts do not appear in our records as separate designs. Many Thurö 33s have been re-engined or refitted over the years; one example from 1976 now runs on a Yanmar diesel.
