Warwick Yacht Design; cover, cost and conditions
Warwick Yacht Design is a New Zealand design office rather than a builder in the narrow sense. Alan Warwick founded it in 1980. Born in Wellington in 1934, he learned to sail in M Class boats and a Des Townson Zephyr, and in 1962 he began building his first keelboat, a 6.7 metre Townson Pied Piper. His first big success offshore was the Cardinal range, built in Taiwan, and that success led him to open his own office. The firm draws sailing and motor yachts up to 200 feet as well as catamarans, workboats, patrol boats and ferries. The model names follow a simple pattern: a W and the length in feet. Alan Warwick died in 2018.
Our model records list four designs under this name, two sailing yachts and two motor yachts. All are listed from build year 2018 and reach into the most recent build years. The W 66' measures 20.1 metres and is the shortest, while the W 82' sailing yacht comes to 24.68 metres. On the motor side the W 70' at 23.37 metres sits next to the W 103', which at 33.2 metres is the largest design in the set. None of the four is under 20 metres.
Yachts of this length are run more like small ships than weekend boats. Machinery, generators, watermakers and electronics need logged servicing, and a professional crew or a skipper often keeps the records. On the sailing designs, rig and sails are a major item: standing rigging has a service life, and furlers and winches want regular attention. Before buying a used yacht from this range, ask for the full maintenance history, a recent survey with the boat out of the water, and a sea trial under sail or at full power. Ocean passages are what these designs were drawn for.

Series by Warwick Yacht Design, build years and cover
W 66' is a sailing yacht from Warwick Yacht Design, built since 2018.
W 70' is a motor yacht from Warwick Yacht Design, built since 2018.
Also a sailing yacht, built since 2018.
Also a motor yacht, built since 2018.
As the W 66', W 70', W 82' by Warwick Yacht Design and 1 more series are still in production,
parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the W 66', W 82' by Warwick Yacht Design series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the W 70', W 103' by Warwick Yacht Design series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
