Wasa Marin AB; cover, cost and conditions

Wasa Marin AB comes from Södertälje, just south of Stockholm, where the yard grew out of a seasonal service business for sailing yachts, Södertälje Yacht Service. Leif Ängermark drew the boats and Hans Marklund ran production. The first design was the Wasa 55, created by Ängermark together with naval architect Harry Becker. Wasa builds nothing but GRP sailing yachts, fast cruisers with a clean Scandinavian look. The names are simple: Wasa plus a number, and for the three digit names such as 270, 410 or 530 the number divided by ten is close to the length in feet.

Our model records hold 16 Wasa designs, every one of them a sailing yacht. Build years start in 1973 with the Wasa 55 and end in 2020, the last year recorded for the Wasa 38 and the Wasa 530. Seven lines run to 2015 or later, including the 370, 420, 41 IMS, 510 and Wasa Atlantic. Lengths range from the 8.3 metre Wasa 270 to the 15.98 metre Wasa 530. Two models stay under eleven metres, nine sit between 11 and 13 metres, and five are longer, among them three boats at 15.45 metres: the 51 Atlantic, the 510 and the Wasa Atlantic.

Most Wasa yachts are now several decades old, so a good survey of rigging, chainplates and deck fittings pays off before a season of Baltic or North Sea sailing. The bigger boats from eleven metres upward are marina yachts that spend the winter ashore on a cradle. The 510 and 530 are built for longer passages, and owners who sail them offshore tend to plan a refit of sails, standing rigging and engine every few seasons.
