Wefers Boote; cover, cost and conditions
Wefers Boote is the yard of Rolf Wefers in Nettetal, in Germany's Lower Rhine region. Its boats are built by hand in a mixed construction, wood above and plastic below, and the German magazine Yacht calls them elegant and fast. The same report names the RW 26 as the best seller, the RW 32 as the tourer and the RW 16 as the dinghy. After some thirty years Rolf Wefers handed over the management, and production passed to RWN Yacht- und Holzmanufaktur under Christian Schepers, who learned the trade from Wefers himself. Every model carries the RW prefix.
Our model records list twelve RW designs: seven sailing yachts and five sailing boats. Length runs from the 5.5 metre RW 20 to 13 metres for both the RW 40 and the RW 43. The sailing boats are the RW 16, RW 20, RW 22, RW 26 and the RW 29 S, nicknamed Surf Sailor; the yachts are the RW 9,2, RW 9,9, the RW 29 keel cruiser, RW 31, RW 32, RW 40 and RW 43. The RW 32 has the earliest build year, 1979, and runs to 2016 like the RW 9,9. The two models with a decimal comma carry their length in metres in the name. Five lines end in 2012, the year the management changed hands.
Wood above the waterline means varnish work: the brightwork wants sanding and fresh coats before each season, and a winter under a roof keeps it in shape for longer. The smaller boats up to the 6.55 metre RW 22 are light enough for a trailer, which suits inland lakes and weekend trips to new waters. The yachts from just over 9 to 13 metres are berth boats for longer passages on big lakes or along the coast.
