Werft Koenigstein; cover, cost and conditions

Werft Königstein sits in Arnis on the Schlei, an inlet of the Baltic in Schleswig-Holstein. Boatbuilder Jan Brügge founded the yard in 2016, and it has grown into a varied craft business. The Woy 26 is its first design intended for series building, an uncompromising day racer made from hand-picked home-grown timber and drawn by naval architect Martin Menzner. The boat came out of the BioBasedBoats project, which the yard ran together with the University for Sustainable Development in Eberswalde. Its hull is built from four layers of wood veneer, each 2.5 millimetres thick, bonded under vacuum infusion. What you notice first is the pairing of visible wood with a decidedly modern, flat profile.

Our model records list one design from the yard: the Woy 26, a sailing boat of eight metres, with build years 2021 to 2025. The entry does not run into the most recent build years. The yard planned to launch the prototype in summer 2022, with series building to follow. On trials the prototype reached 18.7 knots, which says a good deal about its purpose: quick day sails and racing rather than living aboard. Every boat of this line is young, and each one comes out of the yard's own timber method, so a second-hand example tends to arrive with a short history and few previous owners.

A hull of bonded veneers asks for the care that wood always wants. Keep an eye on the varnish or coating, since bare patches let moisture in, and watch the joints where deck fittings pass through the laminate. A fast day racer works its rig hard, so shrouds, halyards and sails deserve a close look after a busy season. Covered storage over winter helps the timber more than anything else. When looking at a used Woy 26, ask about racing history, look for repaired dings along the topsides and check the keel joint. Owners mostly sail short, fast outings and club races on sheltered water.
