Worth knowing
Western Approaches Yachts Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Western Approaches Yachts worked out of Dartmouth in Devon, a harbour with a long history of boatbuilding, and the business later became Sovereign Yachts, the name most owners know today. The Sovereign range was drawn by the designer Ian Anderson. These are sturdy cruising yachts: the hulls were moulded as solid GRP to Lloyd's scantling rules, using isophthalic resin and powder bound mat to reduce the risk of osmosis. Decks are balsa sandwich with plywood pads under the fittings, and most boats were finished with a 10mm laid teak deck. That teak over an unusually fair hull is often the first thing you notice.
Our model records list two designs, both sailing yachts. The Sovereign 32 C is the smaller of the pair at 9.76 metres and appears from 1985 to 1999. The Sovereign 40 measures 12.2 metres; it was developed as a larger version of the 32 and runs in our records from 1993 to 2000. Neither design reaches the most recent build years, so every Sovereign on the water today is a second hand boat. The 40 is cutter rigged, carries her lead ballast in a long fin keel with a bulbed foot and steers through a semi-balanced rudder behind a skeg. Below deck she has four cabins.
Looking at a Sovereign on the brokerage market, start with the teak. A laid deck of this age may need recaulking or new plugs, and any soft spots around the fittings deserve a moisture meter, since the balsa core sits right underneath. The isophthalic layup was chosen with osmosis in mind, but a survey with the boat out of the water is still the honest way to know the hull. On the 40, check the cutter rig as two separate headsail systems, along with the skeg and rudder bearings. These boats were built for long passages, and many have crossed seas; logbooks and previous refits tell you a lot.
