Westfield Engineering; cover, cost and conditions

Westfield Engineering Co. (Marine) Ltd was a boatbuilder in Poole, Dorset. From 1959 to 1978 it worked out of Cabot Lane in Creekmoor, building the Kingfisher range, every one of them drawn by R.A.G. Nierop, who also ran the company. When he retired in 1978, Moorstream Ltd took over building and selling the boats as Kingfisher Yachts, and production stopped in the early 1980s. So a Westfield is a Kingfisher, and the number in the name is roughly its length in feet.

Our model records hold six Westfield entries, three sailing boats and three sailing yachts. The small boats are the Kingfisher 20 (6.58 m, 1964 to 1976), the 20 Plus (6.62 m, 1971 to 1979) and the 22 (6.58 m, 1970 to 1979). The yachts are the Kingfisher 26 at 7.92 m (1964 to 1970) and the Kingfisher 30 at 9.12 m, which carries the earliest build year, 1961, and runs to 1978. A sixth entry appears under the spelling Klingfisher 26, 8 m long, 1965 to 1972. Build years span 1961 to 1979, lengths 6.58 to 9.12 m.

Every Kingfisher is now well over forty years old, so condition matters more than the model name. The 20 and 22 sit happily on a road trailer and suit drying moorings and small harbours along the south coast; the 26 and 30 are berth boats for longer coastal hops. A survey of keel bolts, rigging and deck fittings before buying pays off, and a dry winter ashore keeps old laminate and woodwork in good shape.
