Windboats Marine Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions
Windboats is a boatyard at Wroxham on the Norfolk Broads. Its roots go back to Graham Bunn, a craftsman and yacht designer who started the yard in 1920 and built small wooden boats, many of which still sail the Broads. The Windboats name arrived after the Second World War under Donald Hagenbach. Aluminium boats followed from 1957, and later hulls in ferro-cement sold under the trade name Seacrete, which gained Lloyd's 100A1 classification. Trevor James, the yard's production director and naval architect, bought the business in 1974. From 1983 Windboats built glassfibre yachts for Oyster, and in 2013 it took over the motorboat builder Hardy Marine.
Our model records hold a single Windboats design, the Endurance 40 sailing yacht, listed for the build years 1970 to 1979 at 14.7 metres. No line of the brand reaches into recent build years. The design comes from the American naval architect Peter Ibold, who drew the Endurance in 1970 as a heavy displacement, long keeled cruiser of 35 feet; larger versions of up to around 50 feet followed. Windboats produced these boats in ferro-cement, while other yards and a good many home builders used the same lines. An Endurance 40 from Wroxham shows a traditional sheer, a long keel and the steady profile of a serious passage maker.
A ferro-cement hull rewards a careful eye. Rust stains weeping through the paint, hairline cracks around fittings and damp in the bilge all hint at water reaching the steel mesh inside, and a survey by someone who knows the material is money well spent before buying. These yachts were built for long passages: the long keel tracks well and the motion at sea is gentle, though she is no quick tacker in a crowded harbour. On a boat of this age the rig, chainplates, engine and tanks are as important as the hull. Many owners keep the original layout and add modern electronics and solar panels for extended cruising.
