Woods; cover, cost and conditions
Woods stands for Woods Designs, the multihull design office of Richard Woods in Torpoint, Cornwall. It draws catamarans above all and sells the plans to home builders and professional yards. Depending on the plan, boats go together in sheet ply, cold moulded ply, cedar strip or foam sandwich; the Sagitta was moulded in glassfibre and launched in July 1991. Richard Woods has worked with multihulls since the 1960s, and in 1989 three Strider catamarans sailed from Plymouth all the way to Tallinn. The names give the range away: Odin and Thor, Nimbus and Cirrus, Windsong and Surfsong.
Our model records list 22 Woods designs, 21 sailing catamarans and one sports catamaran, the open 4.3 metre Pixie. Build years start in 1980. Thirteen lines are recorded up to 2005 or 2006, the Mira lasting longest, and nine ended between 1992 and 1995, including Akka, Odin and Thor. The Wizzer arrives last, from 1997, after Sagitta and Wizard in 1991. The cruising cats run from the 6.6 metre Janus to the 18.3 metre Odin: seven designs stay under 8 metres, eight sit between 8.4 and 10.7 metres, such as Flica, Sagitta and Scylla, and seven reach 12.2 metres or more.
With plan built boats, the builder matters as much as the design. A plywood hull wants its epoxy sheathing and paint kept intact, especially at the bows and along the keels where a beach landing scuffs them. Small cats such as the Strider and Wizard dry out on their keels, so a drying mooring or a trailer suits them well. The larger designs need a wide berth or a multihull space in the marina, and the bridgedeck underside is worth checking for slamming wear.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are Woods catamarans production boats or home builds?
Both.
Woods Designs sells plans to home builders and to yards,
and some types such as the Sagitta were moulded in glassfibre.
Two boats of the same design can therefore differ in material, fit out and value.
Which Woods designs are the smallest and the longest?
For Woods: In our records the open Pixie is the smallest at 4.3 metres,
followed by the Janus at 6.6 and the Wizard at 6.7 metres.
The longest are the Odin at 18.3, the Argo at 15.25 and the Cirrus at 14 metres.

For the Mira, Cirrus, Flica by Woods and 10 more series the market value and the replacement cost
often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Merlin, Argo, Akka by Woods and 6 more series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Mira, Cirrus, Flica by Woods and further series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
For the Pixie by Woods series: Open catamarans are beached and trailed,
so most damage happens ashore and in transit, not on the water.
