Worth knowing
Y.B.M.; cover, cost and conditions
Y.B.M. (Eagle 80) stands for Yacht Building Management, a yard in Gdańsk on Poland's Baltic coast. The sailor Janusz Zawadowicz founded it in 1991 with the aim of building large, contemporary sailing and motor yachts. The yard works to commission, shaping each yacht around its owner, and also takes on refits. Its profile gives a range of roughly ten to 37 metres. Better known launches include the sailing yacht White Eagle of 1991 at 36.3 metres, now sailing as Alexa of London, the sloop Green Magic of 1999 at 25.5 metres and the motor yacht Katama of 2001. With one-off builds like these there is no single house look.
Our model records list two designs, both with build years from 1997 to 2005: the Eagle 80 sailing yacht at 24.5 metres and the Timeless 90 motor yacht at 27.3 metres. The numbers in the names track the length in feet, 80 feet being just over 24 metres and 90 feet just over 27. Neither design reaches into the most recent build years. The two entries mirror the yard's two lines of work since its founding, sail and power, both well beyond twenty metres. For custom yachts of this size an entry should be read as a type: interior, rig, engines and systems can differ markedly from one hull to the next.
A yacht of this size is a set of systems as much as a hull. On a used Eagle 80, the rig, standing rigging and sail wardrobe deserve a specialist survey, and the age of the rigging should be documented. On a Timeless 90, engine hours, generator logs and the condition of shafts and stabilisers tell most of the story. Both will have spent years with professional crew or management, so a complete maintenance file is worth asking for. Because each boat was built to an owner's brief, original drawings and a list of later refit work help to understand what is actually on board.

series: On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Timeless 90 by Y.B.M.
series: On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
