Yachtwerft Benjamins is a small yard in Emden in north-west Germany, and since it was set up in 1974 its speciality has been building in aluminium. Heiner Uffen, a master shipbuilder trained in mechanical engineering and welding, took the yard over in 1999. Since 2004 it has built yachts to Berckemeyer designs, with naval architect Martin Menzner working closely alongside, turning owners' wishes into drawings. The result is custom and semi-custom aluminium yachts, often with keels of variable draft and interiors laid out to order. The welding is done by MIG-MAG. Besides yachts the yard builds motorboats and craft for authorities such as the police and customs, and it takes on refits. Bristol is one of the Berckemeyer layouts, alongside Clipper, Pilothouse and Classic.

Aluminium is tough, but it asks for discipline with electrics and metals. Stray current and the wrong fastenings cause galvanic corrosion, so anodes, shore power isolation and any stainless fittings bedded on the hull deserve regular checks. Paint damage should be repaired quickly before the bare metal is exposed for long. A variable draft keel needs its lifting gear, pins and seals serviced. When looking at a used Nordsee 34 or a later BM model, ask for thickness readings of the plating and the history of the keel mechanism. Shallow tidal waters are where these boats feel at home.
