Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH & Co KG; cover, cost and conditions

Yachtzentrum Greifswald is the earlier name of the yard known today as HanseYachts. Michael Schmidt, winner of the 1985 Admiral's Cup, founded it in 1990 in Greifswald, right on the River Ryck. Its roots go further back, to the Boots- und Reparaturwerft Greifswald and before that to the Buchholz yard, which built in wood. In the early years refit and repair work came first. Series building began in 1993 with the Hanse 291, based on the Aphrodite 291 and on ideas from the designers Carl Baier and Bent Elgaard. The Hanse 331, derived from the Finngulf 33, followed. The company kept the Yachtzentrum Greifswald name until 2006.

Our model records hold 15 designs: twelve Hanse sailing yachts, one open sailing boat and two motorboats. The Hanse line runs from the 291 at 8.9 metres through the 292, 300, 301, 311, 312, 331, 341, 371, 401 and 411 to the Hanse 531 at 16.15 metres. The list also holds three boats under the Conley 21 name, a sailing boat of 6.05 metres plus the Sportfisher and Tukerboot motorboats. The years in our records start in 1986 with the Hanse 301, earlier than the yard history in the source. The last entries end in 2008, among them the 300, 312, 371, 411 and 531, so none reaches the most recent build years. Nine Hanse yachts fall between 8.9 and 11.3 metres.

Hanse yachts from these years now change hands as used cruisers, and age shows in predictable places. Check the joint between keel and hull and the keel bolts, especially on boats that have touched bottom in the shallow Baltic. Chainplates and their bulkhead attachments deserve a look for water ingress and stains. Standing rigging older than ten to fifteen years is usually due for renewal whatever it looks like. Teak decks, where fitted, wear thin over the years. The engine, the seals of saildrive or shaft and the age of the sails round off a sensible inspection. On the larger 401, 411 and 531, systems such as windlass, heating and electronics add to the list.

What this means for the cover

For the Hanse 300, Hanse 312, Hanse 371 by Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH & Co KG and 11 more series

the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Conley 21 by Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH & Co KG series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Hanse 300, Hanse 312, Hanse 371 by Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH & Co KG and further

series: On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.

For the Conley 21 Sportfisher, Conley 21 Tukerboot by Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH & Co KG series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.

For the Conley 21 by Yachtzentrum Greifswald GmbH & Co KG series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
