Worth knowing

Yarmouth Boat Company Ltd.; cover, cost and conditions

The Yarmouth Boat Company was based on the Isle of Wight and built the Yarmouth 23 there, a small glassfibre gaff cutter. Gordon Wyatt and David Freeman drew it in 1988; the pair are mainly known for the Fisher range of motor-sailers. Numbers stayed relatively small. Building began in the UK, and in the early 2000s production moved to Neil Marine in Sri Lanka, which later took on the Fisher motor-sailers as well. The Yarmouth 23 is recognised by its gaff cutter rig, a traditional long keel and a raised foredeck that gives more room below. Boats were sold complete or as kits.

Our model records hold one design from the yard, the Yarmouth 23. It is entered as a sailing boat of 7 metres, which matches the 23 feet of its name, with build years from 1996 to 2013. The entry does not reach the most recent build years. Since the source places the move to Sri Lanka in the early 2000s, boats from the recorded period may come from either country. Compared with the beamier centreboard gaffers of the same era, the Yarmouth 23 is heavier, sits on a long keel and offers more headroom.

A gaff rig asks for regular attention. Jaws, throat and peak halyards and the lacing of the sail wear where they rub, and spars want checking every season. The long keel makes the boat steady on the helm and kind in a seaway, though it will not take the ground upright as a centreboarder does, so legs or a careful choice of mooring help in tidal waters. Because the boat was also sold as a kit, the quality of the fit-out varies; on a used example look at the joinery, the wiring and the engine installation as closely as at the hull. Teak trim and deck fittings deserve a careful look for leaks.
