Worth knowing

Zeydon Shipyard; cover, cost and conditions

Zeydon is a Belgian yard founded by Ben van Hool with the aim of building fast semi-custom cruising yachts, and the Z60 was its first boat. It was presented in 2008 as a joint project with BMW Designworks, while the yacht designer Peter Bosgraaf worked on the hull and its hydrodynamics. The boat was built in a purpose-made facility in Belgium using vacuum-infused multiaxial E-glass and epoxy, with carbon reinforcement in the high-load areas. The Z60 is easy to tell apart: above the sheerline the styling borrows from car design, below it the lines follow the Open 60 racing class, though without the extreme beam or a canting keel. It was conceived as a yacht that a small crew can handle.

Our model records list a single Zeydon, the Z60. It is entered as a sailing yacht of 18.3 metres, the 60 feet of its name, with build years from 2004 to 2012. The entry does not run into recent build years, so a Z60 today is a second-hand purchase. Published figures give a beam of almost 5.2 metres and a target displacement of around 22 tonnes. No other Zeydon models appear in our records.

Epoxy laminates with carbon reinforcement are stiff and light, and they reward careful inspection. On a used Z60 a survey should look at the laminate around the keel, the chainplates and the mast step, where the loads concentrate. A yacht of this size built for shorthanded sailing relies on winches and furling gear in good order, so their servicing records matter. Sails and running rigging on a performance boat wear faster than on a heavy cruiser, and a tired wardrobe takes the edge off the boat at once. Owners tend to use such a yacht for longer passages, and a thorough survey before purchase is worth more than any brochure.

What this means for the cover

For the Zeydon Z60 by Zeydon Shipyard series the market value and the replacement cost often

differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Zeydon Z60 by Zeydon Shipyard series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
