This is a coast of sounds, sea lochs and skerries where the tide sets the plan. In the Gulf of Corryvreckan, between Jura and Scarba, the flood runs at up to eight and a half knots over a deep hole and a rising pinnacle, throwing up whirlpools and standing waves; the Admiralty pilot calls the passage very violent and dangerous. Kyle Rhea runs at up to eight knots at springs. Atlantic swell works into the open anchorages from the west.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from late April to late October and berths sit in the middle price band, well below south coast rates. Boats winter ashore: the yards around Oban lift out and stand them in cradles from early October to the end of March. Visitor moorings are common on this coast, and it is worth looking at the one you pick up before a blow rather than trusting it in the dark.

Two questions are worth putting to the policy: does it answer while the boat lies on a mooring that belongs to someone else rather than in a marina, and does it name grounding and the tow that follows, the way it happens among drying rocks?
