Åbo Bådværft; cover, cost and conditions
Åbo is the Swedish name for the Finnish city of Turku, and that is where the yard behind the Finnsailer 29 stood. Turun Veneveistämö Oy, known in Swedish as Åbo Båtvarf, was founded in 1955 with Risto Pohjanheimo and Åke Andrée as the main shareholders. From 1957 it built glassfibre leisure boats in Turku alongside rescue and patrol craft. In 1964 its creditor Oy Telko Ab took over the struggling business and sold it to the industrial group Oy Fiskars Ab. The yard was wound up as a separate company in 1973, while boatbuilding carried on as a Fiskars unit. Under the Finnsailer name it turned out sturdy motorsailers for the Baltic until Fiskars stopped building leisure boats in 1981.
Our model records hold one design for this yard, the Finnsailer 29, entered as a sailing yacht of 8.9 metres with build years from 1968 to 1987. The entry does not reach into recent build years. The boat was drawn by the British designer Angus S. Primrose and built in Turku as well as at other yards. It pairs a long keel and a masthead sloop rig with a deckhouse from which the boat can also be driven under power, a motorsailer for the often light and fickle Baltic winds. The same family included the Finnsailer 35, based on the lines of a Baltic pilot boat, the 34 by Hans Groop and the in-house 30 and 38. Those sister boats are not listed under this brand in our records.
A Finnsailer 29 has now seen several decades of use, so a careful survey matters more than any brochure. On a long keel boat of this age, look at the keel bolts or encapsulation, the rudder bearings and the joint between hull and deck. The deckhouse windows and their seals are worth checking for leaks, since water that gets in there finds its way into the joinery. A motorsailer relies on its engine more than a pure sailing yacht, so ask for the engine history and check the shaft, stern gland and fuel tank. The rig, often original, deserves a close look at chainplates and standing rigging. Many of these boats still sail the Finnish and Swedish archipelagos.
