Aquawatt is a small electric boat yard in Moosburg, Carinthia, a short drive from the Wörthersee in southern Austria. The man behind it is Dieter Seebacher, a marine surveyor who has worked on bringing water and electricity together since the early nineties. According to the company, its first own boats and motors appeared from 1990, and the brand has been registered since 1993 for marine propulsion, battery systems, chargers and control units. So Aquawatt does not only build hulls but also the technology that moves them. Its boats are recognisable by light hulls designed to need little energy, and by running without exhaust and almost without sound. Test drives are offered on the Wörthersee.
Our model records hold exactly one Aquawatt design: the Cosmo 600, a six metre motorboat listed for the build years 2012 to 2017, so no line reaches into the most recent years. The Cosmo 600 has a beam of 1.8 metres and a markedly deep V hull with a clear step. In the version described by the trade press it uses a 22 kilowatt Aquawatt electric motor fed by a 13 kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery, with a range of 18 to 100 kilometres depending on speed and a top speed of 38 km/h. At boot Düsseldorf in 2015 the yard showed the boat with its new Green Flash outboard of 40 kilowatts. The Cosmo 600 was conceived as an elegant tender and day boat. Other Aquawatt designs, such as the 848 twin carbon, are not part of our records.
With an electric boat the battery is the heart of the matter. Lithium-ion packs age with cycles and with the way they are stored, so a buyer of a used Cosmo 600 should ask for the battery's age, its remaining capacity and the charging history, and look at chargers, cables and connectors for corrosion. The controller and the motor deserve a test run on the water rather than a glance in the shed. The stepped hull wants a careful check along the step and the chines after trailering. Since the line ended in 2017, every boat on the market today has had at least one owner, and a written record of service work on the drive is worth more than any brochure.
